The Truth About Transition
Transition sucks. It’s no-man’s-land. It’s being in the middle of the desert, undecided whether to go forward, backward or nowhere at all. It’s being only sure of uncertainty. It’s uncomfortable. Life is composed of transitions. If you’re not experiencing one, just wait. There’s one coming to your neighborhood. Here are three thoughts to guide you through yours. Don’t Resist Transition There’s no growth without transition so don’t resist it. How do you grow without changing? It’s impossible. In order to achieve your next level, you must be willing to change, and if you’re going to change, you will have to go through it in stages. If you’re not growing, then you’re either stagnant or dying. There are many examples of this in ordinary life. A child is born. You don’t expect the child to remain the same. In fact, you’d be disappointed and concerned if he did. Rather, you expect him to grow, to find his way and to flourish. This process is repeated in nature and in the animal kingdom. Even the universe constantly expands. You must also expand to become all that God created you to be – to live up to your full potential. This is one of the grand themes of life. Embrace this truth and join the chorus of creation; ever-changing, ever-learning, ever-growing. Transition is Costly But Worth the Ticket Transition always costs you something. The new job or venture may cost you security. The new investment will cost you money. Your changes may cost you friends or support systems. Your mind and your body will scream for you to remain as you are because that seems easiest, but inside, you know that you must go on to be all you can be. That takes guts—it takes a decision, courage and action. But making the stretch to a larger you; a more authentic you is priceless. It’s like the commercial where “Old You” tells “Younger You” to go ahead and make the change because it works out in the end.
Transition Precedes Success We’re all accustomed to seeing success as a finished product. We’ve heard the amazing stories of the garage startups, the awe-inspiring artist or the world-class athlete with the blockbuster deal. But the part we focus on is the blockbuster deal. We forget that every success story has exactly that: A story. And it’s usually a tale of transitions; of morphing through struggles, failure, opposition, setbacks and inertia. There are always multiple trials before the breakthrough. True success is not a material outcome; it’s what we become by persevering and grinding through transition.
